Hinds Community College graduated more than 800 students in one of three graduation ceremonies at the Muse Center on the Rankin Campus on Dec. 5, 2021. Hinds awarded 1,150 certificates and degrees, with some students receiving more than one credential. Of those graduating,148 were cum laude with a grade point average of 3.2 to 3.59; 94 were graduating magna cum laude with a grade point average of 3.6 to 3.99 and 117 were graduating summa cum laude with a grade point average of 4.0. Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, welcomed 1,128 new initiates from 41 universities during November 2021. Students initiated into the Society must be sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduate/professional students in the top 35% of their class, demonstrate leadership experience in at least one of the five pillars, and embrace the ODK ideals. Fewer than five percent of students on a campus are invited to join each year.

Despite the lingering COVID-19 pandemic that has had a negative impact on scholarly activities, institutions of higher learning across the country are riding a new wave of increasing enrollment as incoming and transferring college students appear eager to continue their academic journeys. That's especially true at Mississippi College. However, the University's improving enrollment numbers aren't just attributable to a declining worldwide pandemic, according to Hannah Richards, director of enrollment marketing and communications at MC. "We see across the board that our students are not just attracted to the price point we ask or to the location we're in, but to the unconditional warmth and community they find on our campus," Richards said, "in conjunction with professors at the top of their fields who also make themselves available to students in a myriad of ways, on campus and off, in churches and in small groups. "Students get to experience all of this when they come to MC for a visit, and I think it's incredibly attractive." The "personal touch" of new student recruitment at MC extends all the way to the top. Last year, Dr. Blake Thompson, Mississippi College president, wrote more than 500 personal notes to students who attended one of the many regional recruitment events hosted by the University. "Our new student numbers are up, year over year," she said. "A lot of that is due to our regional strategy. Our regional recruiters have proven to be an effective piece of the recruitment model, connecting with even more students on their home turf." Between January and April, MC's Office of Admissions hosted about 800 prospective students in 18 recruiting events across the Southeast. Richards said the recruiters concentrated on four areas in particular: Birmingham, Memphis, the northern shore of Louisiana and the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. The recruiters invited small groups of interested students to dinner at local restaurants or coffee shops to meet with MC faculty members, students and admissions counselors and learn about life at the Christian University. Along with hosting academic Select Scholars Competition and Transfer Scholar Competition - events that attract 120 to 150 students vying for valuable scholarships - and receptions of up to 150 prospective students, the less-formal, individualized meetings are a hit with incoming freshmen and transfer students alike.

The following people recently were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

The University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy presented its 2021-2022 first-year students their traditional white coats in a cermony hosted in Oxford. The white coat is a symbol of professionalism, and this ceremony marks the beginning of their professional journey toward becoming a pharmacist.

The Mississippi College Marching Band made its 2021 debut Sept. 2 on campus with performances at MC's football home opener against Albany State. The band is under the direction of Duncan Goff.

Southeast Missouri State University has announced its spring and summer 2021 graduates.

Nearly 500 students were awarded degrees as part of Jacksonville State University's Summer 2021 commencement on August 6.

Lee University congratulates students who earned Dean's List honors during the Spring 2021 semester. Dean's List recognition is earned by full-time, on-campus students with a semester grade point average between 3.7 and 4.00. A total 593 Hinds Community College students graduated in one of three ceremonies on July 30 with 320 students choosing to participate in one of the ceremonies. Hinds Community College held three graduation ceremonies on Thursday, May 13 at the Rankin Campus and a fourth ceremony on Saturday, May 15 at the Utica Campus. "Commencement is a proud occasion for the Hinds Community College family. Every graduation ceremony is special at the college as we celebrate the success of each student," said Hinds President Dr. Stephen Vacik. "It's important that we truly celebrate what you have accomplished, what you have achieved and what you're going to achieve. You have made it through a series of unusual circumstances to get to this point and you are to be commended." Nearly 1,000 students participated in one of the four ceremonies, including students eligible to participate in previous ceremonies cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In total, Hinds conferred 1,761 degrees or certificates, with some students receiving more than one credential. Out of those, 300 graduated cum laude with a grade point average of 3.2 to 3.59; 240 graduated magna cum laude with a grade point average of 3.6 to 3.99 and 111 graduated summa cum laude with a grade point average of 4.0. Eligibility is based on a minimum course load of 12 hours (exclusive of audit and pass/fail courses this semester) and a quality grade point average of 3.5 with no grade below a C (inclusive of audit, pass/fail courses and zero-credit courses).
