Orionna Brumfield of Brookhaven among Hinds CC Wind Ensemble members performing at Pepsi Pops

2014 Apr 16

The Hinds Community College Hinds Wind Ensemble will perform at the Pepsi Pops Concert on May 9 as the opening performance for the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra.

The performance includes 52 members of the band who will also perform in France in May in a concert series, "Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of D-Day: The Battle of Normandy and the Liberation of France."

Among those is Brookhaven High School graduate Orionna Brumfield of Brookhaven who plays Trumpet.

The concert series is sponsored through the American Celebration of Music in coordination with the U.S. Department of Defense. The Hinds Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and Brass Quintet will participate in a wreath laying ceremony at the American Cemetery in Coleville and will play a small patriotic concert at the historic site. They will have additional performances in Rouen and Paris. All the invited music ensembles will be recognized in France for their participation.

"It's a great honor and a privilege for the Hinds Wind Ensemble to be invited to perform for such an important occasion," said Hinds band director Shane Sprayberry.

The Pepsi Pops performance "will expose us to a crowd of 6,000-7,000 people, and we'll be performing our France trip program," Sprayberry said.

To raise money to send the 52 band members, along with the 11 faculty members who will make the trip, the band has a fund-raising concert at 7 p.m. on April 24 in Cain-Cochran Hall on the Raymond Campus. Admission is $5.

Sprayberry has chosen selections that are patriotic or composed by Mississippians for the concerts.

The selections are "Crown Imperial" by William Walton, arranged by W.J. Duthoit; "Hymn to the Fallen", from "Saving Private Ryan", by John Williams; "Fanfare for the Common Man" by Aaron Copland; Columbia-Eagle March by Mississippi composer James Sclater; "Savor the Last Dance" by Mississippi composer Tyler Griffin, "Hounds of Spring" by Alfred Reed and "One Life Beautiful" by Julie Giroux.
